AbstractThis paper aims to explore the China-Brazil CBERS sensor as an additional data source to assist the mapping and the monitoring of the mangrove forest in the Northeastern Brazilian coast. A multi-temporal analysis of Landsat and CBERS images was performed for coastal areas at the State of Ceará between 1986 and 2004. Digital processing techniques, including segmentation by region growing, and supervised classification were applied to TM/Landsat5 (1986), ETM+/Landsat7 (1991), and CCD/CBERS2 (2004). The change detection of the mangrove areas were performed based on the map overlay technique of the digital classifications in a GIS environment. The total mangrove area estimated for the periods of 1986, 1991 and 2004 was 80.64, 90.04, and 84.88 km2, respectively. The cloud occurrence over the mangrove regions disabled the quantitative area analysis. However, the map containing the mangrove area changes was a useful product to analyze the mangrove dynamic and the methodological procedure. The results confirmed the use of CCD/CBERS imagery as an appropriate source of information to monitor this important ecosystem at reduced costs.
